Celebrating the Innovation of Stainless Steel 111 years on

Metal Craft Industries UK Ltd among with millions of others across the UK, Europe and beyond continues to pay tribute to one of the most significant innovations in metallurgy: stainless steel. 111 years later, this wonder material, which revolutionised countless industries, has a storied history rooted in the early 20th century.

Reg Larkin, Managing Director of Metal Craft Industries UK Ltd, reflects on the indispensable role of stainless steel in modern engineering. "We cannot exist without metalwork. Look around, and you'll see our products supporting laboratories, catering, retail, hotels, rail, automotive sectors, and beyond. Our engineers and craftsmen provide innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of these industries," said Larkin.

The story of stainless steel begins with Harry Brearley, born in Sheffield, England, in 1871. In 1908, Brearley was appointed lead researcher at Brown Firth Laboratories. By 1912, he was tasked by a small arms manufacturer to develop a more durable steel for gun barrels, which were suffering from rapid erosion. Brearley’s experiments with steel alloys containing chromium led to the creation of several variations, with chromium content ranging from 6% to 15% and differing levels of carbon.

On August 13, 1913, Brearley produced a steel alloy containing 12.8% chromium and 0.24% carbon. This composition, which resisted corrosion far better than its counterparts, is widely recognised as the first stainless steel. Myth surrounds Brearley’s discovery, with tales suggesting he stumbled upon its rust-resistant properties by chance, much like Alexander Fleming's serendipitous discovery of penicillin years later.

Metal Craft Industries UK Ltd, based in the East Midlands, manufactures a diverse array of products, including catering and warehouse equipment, and supplies components to international businesses. The company prides itself on meeting customer needs for sheet metal fabrications with precision and reliability.

"At Metal Craft Industries, our commitment to excellence is reflected in our ISO 9001 and Altius certifications for quality management. Every team member contributes to our drive for excellence, continuously striving to deliver exceptional value to our customers. Our collaborative and innovative approach ensures we meet and exceed industry standards," Larkin noted.

The impact of stainless steel on industry cannot be overstated. Its resistance to corrosion and wear has made it a critical material in countless applications, from medical instruments to automotive components, and from kitchen appliances to large-scale infrastructure projects.

"New mysteries evolve in prototypes and products yet to be built. Our engineers and craftsmen are dedicated to exploring these frontiers, ensuring we remain attentive to our customers' needs and the demands of an innovative workforce," added Larkin.

As Metal Craft Industries UK Ltd continues to embrace the legacy of Harry Brearley’s discovery, they invite customers to reach out and discuss their specific requirements. The company remains committed to fostering an environment of challenge, friendship, stability, and success, both for their team members and their customers.
