Metal Craft Industries UK Ltd are no strangers to problem solving unique challenges proposed by the firm's customers. One such successful project was for Penguin Random House Distribution, one of the UK’s leading third-party book distributors. The project, carried out at the Grantham Book Services facility, showcases Metal Craft Industries UK's commitment to advancing British manufacturing and its ability to deliver tailored products that meet specific customer requirements.
Penguin Random House Distribution, through its partner DMA Storage Solutions, sought a solution for a long-standing challenge at its Grantham Book Services warehouse—a 330,000 square foot facility storing over 17 million books. The warehouse, which handles titles from independent publishers, required an upgrade to the trolleys used by staff to pick books from shelves in the narrow aisles of the storage area.
The existing trolleys, affectionately known as ‘Prams,’ had served their purpose well for many years. These trolleys were essential for navigating the warehouse’s narrow 880mm corridors, allowing staff to manoeuvre easily through tight spaces. However, the old trolleys were nearing the end of their service life and presented a significant storage challenge, as they did not stack efficiently when not in use, occupying valuable space.
DMA Storage Solutions had searched extensively for a suitable off-the-shelf replacement but found nothing that met the precise requirements of the warehouse. Recognising the need for a custom solution, they turned to Metal Craft Industries UK Ltd for help.
Reg Larkin, Managing Director of Metal Craft Industries UK Ltd, explained the company’s approach: “When we were first approached with this challenge, we knew that a one-size-fits-all solution wouldn’t work. Our team visited the warehouse, spoke with the staff, and took the time to understand exactly what was needed. This hands-on approach is central to our philosophy of providing tailored solutions that truly meet our customers’ needs.”
Metal Craft Industries UK responded by visiting the Grantham Book Services site to understand the specific challenges faced by the staff. After thorough discussions and a detailed analysis of the existing trolleys, Metal Craft Industries UK designed a prototype that addressed all the identified needs. The new trolleys were not only sized perfectly for the narrow aisles but also featured several enhancements, including the ability to stack when not in use, a dedicated storage box at the rear for essential items, and a ticket holder for staff identification.
Reflecting on the outcome, Larkin added, “We’re incredibly proud of how this project turned out. The new trolleys are more efficient, easier to store, and better suited to the unique environment at Grantham Book Services. It’s a great example of how innovative design and a commitment to quality can solve real-world problems.”
After testing the prototype on-site, where only a minor modification was needed, Metal Craft Industries quickly moved to full production. Within a few weeks, 40 new trolleys were delivered to the warehouse, where they were promptly put to use. The feedback from Penguin Random House Distribution has been overwhelmingly positive. The new trolleys not only meet the functional needs of the staff but have also resolved the storage issue, freeing up much-needed space in the warehouse.
“This project highlights our dedication to solving complex logistical challenges,” said Larkin. “It’s a clear demonstration of our ability to adapt and innovate in response to our customers’ needs. At Metal Craft Industries, we’re not just about manufacturing; we’re about finding solutions that work.”
This project with Penguin Random House Distribution underscores Metal Craft Industries’ dedication to British manufacturing. The company continues to contribute to the UK economy by providing high-quality, bespoke solutions across a range of industries, including catering, transportation, retail, and more. For Metal Craft Industries, this success story is another testament to the company’s commitment to excellence in manufacturing and its role in supporting British industry.
